Building Regulations Part L - CHANGES AHEAD
Progress on the changes to Part L have been slow and there is very little to actually report. The documents have been held up at the ODPM for a variety of reasons. However it is expected that they will be published soon. We understand that the start date may be put back to April 2006 to allow everybody to get used to the new methods. The government intend to run four management seminars in September hosted by both the RICS and ABE with eight roadshows starting in October and 30 workshops starting in November. To help our clients keep up to date with these important changes in legislation, will be running a series of seminars and workshops over the Autumn and Winter period. For up to date information contact Martin Conlon on 01924 364366.
Lightning Reactions!!!
Inclusive Design Manager, Terry Warren has just finished delivering a series of 2005 DDA1 Part M Update seminars. The countrywide tour began in Wakefield and ended in Taunton, although staff had some frantic last minute organising to do after the hotel booked in Southampton was struck by lightning! The reaction to the seminars was very positive. Terry says: "The Disability Discrimination Act in relation to the construction industry is a complex area and I think everyone who attended now appreciates that the legislation is ongoing and cannot be ignored. Our clients and their clients need to be able to react quickly to the challenges presented in this constantly evolving area." At the time of going to press it looks as though a major high street retailer will be the first to be prosecuted under Part III of the DDA for failing to improve access to goods and services for a wheelchair user. Terry says: "This is likely to be a landmark case with potential implications for all UK Service Providers."
